GEORGE TOWN: Controversial rapper and musician Wee Meng Chee has been arrested for allegedly insulting religion in one of his music videos, shot at a mosque in Penang.
Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mior Farid Alatrash said Wee, better known as Namewee, was detained at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport today upon his return from abroad.
"He will be transferred to Penang to assist in our investigations.
"We will remand him at the George Town magistrate's court tomorrow," Mior said yesterday.
Several Malay interest groups had lodged separate police reports against Wee over the four-minute music video, which went viral last month.
Wee is no stranger to controversial video clips, with numerous issues raised over the years.
Namewee, who is also a filmmaker, first shot to fame in 2007 with his controversial parody using elements of the national anthem.
