[h=2]Fail, Fail, Fail![/h]

While thinking of a word/words to describe the performance of our government over the past few years, I realised that the title of this article is appropriate. I am a Singaporean residing overseas but I follow developments in Singapore through the internet and online forums. It is not hard to see that Singapore now is very different from the Singapore I used to know, at the time that I went overseas to work. Simply put, the government has failed big time to take sufficient care of its people, the ones who voted it into power. I will quote some examples in this article, and future articles when time permits.
The government has failed to provide stable and conducive living conditions for the average Singaporean. There are many aspects that make up a stable and conducive living environment, and I will try to list them below, and also show how the government has failed.
a. Jobs
One of the most important things that are important to us will be our jobs. There must be sufficient jobs that pay a reasonable wage for us to be able to pay our bills. Many governments all around the world strive to provide enough jobs to their own people, failing which they will be voted out. However our government has a much publicised policy of welcoming any Tom, Dick or Harry from third world countries into our labor market. It does not take a genius to figure out that these foreigners compete with native Singaporeans for jobs, therby increasing the supply of labor and pushing down the average wage. Job security is also very important to any worker, and when there is an ample supply of cheap foreigners, any Singaporean whose job scope is not a specialised one will fear for his/her job. The employers will also have more bargaining power in making the Singaporean worker bow to their wishes, knowing that a Singaporean can be very easily replaced by a cheaper foreigner. Without the security of a job to feed ourselves, how can we be happy with the current conditions facing us in the job market now?
b. Housing
Another thing very important to everyone is housing. It used to be that native Sinaporeans were provided with a cheap and accessible form of public housing that was easily available. My dad bought a 4 room flat for about $65k in the 1980s, and with his less than $2k a month salary, paid off the loan by himself in about 10-15 years, and is now debt free. However for someone starting a family now, a 4 room flat costs upwards of $300k and takes two persons working for 20-30 years to pay off the loan, due mainly to the unfair practice of allowing foreigners to buy public housing, thereby increasing demand and pushing up the price. Every time the HDB launches new flats for sale, the new flats are oversubscribed and a newly wed couple has to wait up to a few years to receive the keys to their flat. My brother in law got married in 2009, and only just received his keys at the beginning of this year. Why do they have to wait so long? Simply because new flats are the only flats out of reach to foreigners. Resale flats are priced out of the reach of many newly weds because foreigners are allowed to buy them. The only alternative for many newly weds is to buy a new flat. Many of them have to wait a few years to be able to have a home to call their own, then spend the next 20-30 years slogging away at their jobs for fear of losing it, so that they will be able to pay for their housing loan. Any guesses as to why our nation’s birth rate is one of the lowest in the developed world? Simply because of the jobs and housing conditions in Singapore right
now!
c. Public transport
It used to be that I can expect to travel to my workplace, or anywhere else on the island, in reasonable comfort, via trains or buses. The government called our transport system world class. I have my doubts, but I also did not have any complaints about our public transport system. That was years ago. Although I don’t use our public transport system now simply because I am out of the country, I do know of the many disruptions of train and rail services that have occured within the span of less than a year. I also know of how crowded buses have now become, how the buses have become less frequent to the extent of having to wait 20 minutes or more for a bus, and worse, how reckless foreign bus drivers are causing fatal accidents with alarming frequency on our roads! These can be again linked to the fact that there are many more foreigners in our country, thereby increasing the demand for public transport, making it more and more congested. It does not help that the public transport companies, now privatised, seek to maximise profits first and foremost. To them, expenses must be reduced, thus maintainence costs take a backseat, leading to the many disruptions to the train and rail services. Next, the number of passengers on every train or bus must be maximised, thus the frequency of buses and trains are reduced so that they can fill up most of the spaces. So imagine travelling in buses or trains packed to the brim everyday to a job that you might lose anytime in order to service a 20-30 year loan on your public housing. Oops, sorry, I don’t have to imagine, it is happening right now to many people in Singapore!
There are many more areas in which the government has failed us, the people of Singapore. I am sure many people already know what they are, and many articles have been written about them. If time permits, I will write about some other areas in which the government has failed us. I will also write about what I hope to see in our political landscape so that the conditions mentioned above in this article can be improved upon.
In conclusion, I would like to state that I do not support any political party outright, but I like the Worker’s Party’s coherent theme and slogan in last year’s GE and this year’s by-election: “Towards a First World Parliament”. It shows unity in their ideas and an unified objective which they are working towards. I would also like to ‘copy’ their method of ending their rally speeches by citing the same slogan.
My slogan is what I would like to see happen in the next GE in 2016, so that I can see any sort of improvement in terms of jobs, housing, transport and many other areas. In other words, I am completely convinced that with the current government, no improvements whatsoever will occur should they continue to stay in power.

My slogan is very simple:
Vote Them Out 2016 or VTO 2016. VTO 2016!! VTO 2016!!
