ALOR SETAR: Kedah is in the midst of providing free rabies vaccinations and has asked federal authorities for additional supplies of vaccines.

At the same time, the Veterinary Department has advised dog owners to keep their pets confined for at least two months to prevent them from being infected by stray dogs.

Kedah Veterinary Services Department director Dr Kamaliah Ghazali said the department would apply for additional supplies as the existingstock of vaccines could only cater to 20 per cent of about 20,000 dogs in the state.

The department was in the midst of giving free vaccination. At present, dog owners are charged RM5 at the state veterinary services department.

Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Padang Terap, Pendang, Sik and Baling districts have been gazetted as a rabies immune belt under the Animals Act.

Dr Kamaliah advised dog owners to take precautions to ensure their pets do not get into contact with stray dogs, either through bite or saliva which could cause the spread of the virus.

A two-month confinement period was important as it was believed the virus could easily spread within that period.

“So, we ask dog owners to confine their pets within an enclosed space because once the dog escapes, other infected dogs could bite the canines and later, the owners could be bitten by their own dogs,” she said here. There had been six cases of people having been bitten by dogs in Kota Setar and Kubang Pasu, and on Sept 15, a person tested positive for a dog bite in Tanjung Bendahara, Alor Setar.

So far this year, 800 vaccinations each had been carried out in Kota Setar and Kubang Pasu districts.

GEORGE TOWN • Malaysia is battling to curb thespread of rabies in three states, where more than 900 stray dogs have been culled, as the often fatal viral disease raises its ugly head, media reported yesterday.

The culling exercise is now in full swing with some 200 personnel from the Veterinary Services Department throughout the country deployed to rabies-hit Penang, Kedah and Perlis.

Dr Siti Salmiah Tahir, Penang's director of veterinary services, said the strays were caught using tranquillisers and put to sleep by injection on site.

down here oso got lots of rabid dogs :D

GEORGE TOWN: None of the people bitten by dogs in Perlis, Kedah and Penang have been infected by rabies.

However, 10 of 39 dogs which bit them have tested positive for the disease.

Health Ministry director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the victims were given proper treatment, including anti-rabies vaccination, at hospitals.

“They are in stable condition and show no symptoms of rabies infection. They are still being monitored,” he said yesterday.

Dr Noor Hisham said the respective state health departments had also taken necessary prevention and control measures by issuing health alerts to doctors.

He said the departments were also preparing sufficient rabies vaccines and antibodies.

“Up to last year, Malaysia was free from rabies. The last case reported involving humans was in 1998, while the last rabies case, affecting animals, was in 1999,” said Dr Noor Hisham.

“However, countries in South-East Asia have still been reporting cases of rabies from time to time,” he said.
