Hello fellow Singaporeans, PRs and forumers,
I sincerely seek your help in raising support or online petition to allow old folks to use throttle control for their electric bikes. Details summarised as follows:
- My father, who is 70 years old, has taken up cycling as a means of transport to visit his grandchildren daily from Yishun to Sembawang and vice versa.
- As he has debilitating knees (old age), he finds using the throttle a much better, more controlled and safer means of using the electric bicycle as compared to using cycling to kickstart the electric power. He has seen the doctor and obtained doctor's letter confirming his medical condition (that the strain of heavy cycling can be painful and detrimental to his knees). Show me someone above 70 that doesn't suffer from any joint pain..
- There are plenty of youths with powerful electric bikes zooming around in high speed dangerously with no helmets, and LTA officers are not catching them but instead idling at roadside waiting for old men to crawl pass on their stock electric bikes and find reasons to saman them.
I'm looking for fellow old folks who have been victims of these useless LTA officers who instead of hunting for the dangerously modified bikes, sit idly and wait for old men to prey on. My dad has medical condition on his knees and has to use throttle for better control of the bike but the judge may want to throw my father into jail as my dad pleads not guilty with doctor's certification, and has already explained to the judge that using the throttle to control the bike is much more safer and more controlled than using cycling to power the bicycle. The reasons to support are plenty:
- it takes several cycles in order for the power to kick in, and the cyclist got no idea when the power will kick in (very dangerous if you got no idea when the power will kick in)
- when at the traffic junction, the initial cycling will cause the bicycle to weave in and out and will only stabilise after the power kick in (that is the danger where the cyclist may knock into pedestrians on the left or be knocked down by vehicles on the right)
- when going uphill, there will be obstacles like vehicles illegally parked on the roadside, and if you're on electric bicycles, you have to make a decision whether to stop behind, or overtake on the right (if you stop, you will face difficulty resuming the cycling uphill to overtake the vehicle. ie. 70yrs old, bad knees, etc)
- Why are there still illegally parked vehicles on the roadside? Probably because the LTA and TP officers are idling at some other roads awaiting to book old men...
- With throttle control, it is much safer as one can control when the power kick in and it will minimise the weaving when starting off at junctions.
- With throttle control, it is safer for the cyclist, the pedestrians and motorists when going uphill as power is controlled, regardless of whether the cyclist stops or overtakes the illegally parked vehicles.
- LTA may say," Hey Old Fart, since you got knee pain, why don't u take MRT or Bus?"
- Our forefathers will say, " Hey LTA, have you recently TAKEN MRT or bus?" Having contributed to the success of Singapore, surely these old folks deserve a CHOICE not to be stuck like sardines in MRT or public buses in their GOLDEN years...
- Don't get us started on what LTA has done for Singaporeans these few years: Overcrowding, Inconvenience, Jams, ERP, Higher Tolls, Pay and Pay, approving fare increase amidst deteriorating economy, and more JAMS...
Our forefathers have toiled for decades to contribute their part to build what Singapore is today, and all my father wants is to enjoy a leisurely ride in his electric bicycle to meet his grandchildren: Is that too much to ask, LTA? Why force our forefathers to suffer knee pain by stubbornly refusing to allow old folks to use throttle for their bikes?
Anyone who face similar issues with LTA, or had previously been unfairly fined by LTA, or been jailed by LTA, please reply or email to 'ltasleeping(at)g.m.ail.c0m'.
