SINGAPORE: The founder of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF), Dr Khoo Oon Teik, died on Monday morning. He was 91 years old.

The NKF said Dr Khoo died at about 1am on Monday in hospital, after a long illness.

The foundation described him as a "truly remarkable human being", in its tribute on behalf of those who suffered the anguish of kidney failure, as well as those who cared for and supported kidney failure patients.

The NKF said he inspired many doctors and developed many initiatives when he was Professor of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of the then-University of Singapore.

It said the one illness that has held his abiding interest through all these years was chronic renal failure. The NKF said that in the mid-1950s, the death of his brother from chronic renal failure made him determined to help those who suffer from the same condition.

When dialysis treatment became possible, he worked very hard and made this available in Singapore in 1961.

The late Dr Khoo soon realised that to help the patients with kidney failure, the resources of the community had to be mobilised. He then rallied a group of like-minded colleagues and doctors to form the National Kidney Foundation in 1968.

The NKF was formally inaugurated on 7 April 1969.

The foundation said that despite the initial difficulties, he persevered.

Over the years, he provided critical leadership as the NKF developed and grew to provide dialysis care to renal failure patients in need of help.

He was honoured by the National University of Singapore in 1999, with the creation of the Khoo Oon Teik Professorship in Nephrology.

The NKF said the late Dr Khoo has inspired many with his vision, passion and commitment as he went about working for the sick. But it is his humanity that has been most remembered.

The NKF said that as it continues its mission started by Dr Khoo 43 years ago, it is reminded of his steadfastness of vision and the values he set for helping the patients with kidney failure.
