Published: 10:16 AM, March 11, 2016
SINGAPORE — Former presidential candidate Tan Cheng Bock has declared his candidacy for the forthcoming Presidential Elections, even as a review of certain aspects of the office are underway.
The next presidential election must be held by August 2017.
About 40 people were in attendance at the event. Prior to announcing his bid, he recounted his experience in politics and his medical background. He also talked about his passion for music, particularly playing the ukulele.
Dr Tan wrote on Facebook on Wednesday that his friends and supporters had been asking him if he intended to contest in the next presidential elections. “I owe them an answer ... l shall let Singaporeans know of my intention,” he added.
In the last presidential elections in 2011, Dr Tan garnered 34.85 per cent of votes. He lost to President Tony Tan Keng Yam, who received 35.2 per cent of the votes. The two other candidates during the 2011 contest were Mr Tan Kin Lian and Mr Tan Jee Say.
On Monday, Dr Tan urged Singaporeans to make submissions to the nine-member Constitutional Commission tasked to review and make recommendations on certain aspects of the Elected Presidency. This so as “to ensure that we have a Elected Presidency system that will enable us to elect a truly independent and effective President,” he said on Facebook.
