SINGAPORE: President Tony Tan Keng Yam has called on Singaporeans not to allow diversity to divide the country.
A key theme of his Opening Address to the 12th Parliament is how Singapore has to manage an increasingly diverse population, with different demands, expectations and needs, and still remain a cohesive society.
In his address, Dr Tan set out the government's priorities, policies and programmes for its five-year term.
Dr Tan said that the government will look into the needs and concerns of the different strata in the community.
These include the lower-income, the majority in the middle, those who do exceptionally well, senior citizens and the young Singaporeans.
Dr Tan also highlighted challenges in efforts to reach out to the people.
He stressed that the new media must be used constructively to connect with the digital generation.
Dr Tan also called on all Singaporeans to do their part and work towards a shared goal of creating a better life for all.
