No eye contact, no smiles. And worse, a staff working at the Xiamen Airlines check-in counter even refused to converse with a STOMPer in English, causing him to wonder at the lack of service shown.

"I was at the Terminal 1 Changi Airport on 13 Mar 09 for my flight to Fuzhou via MF 866.
"At the check-in counter 9, the lady who attended to me was not able to converse with me in English even though I had put in simple request like , can I have the aisle seat, can you put the fragile label on my luggage etc.
"She just went about to handle my ticketing without responding nor looking at me. When I repeated again, she then replied in Mandarin that all seats for the aisles are taken up(again no eye contact). She proceeded to check on our hand luggage load (which we told we have none) .
"Her overall attitude did not reflect the friendliness and warmth that our airport staff portrayed during my years of travelling. For one moment, I thought that I am at a airport in China because of the way she is conducting herself to us travellers.
"I noted that she is a PRC and will understand if she cannot converse well in English, but the least is to show a smiling face which will conquer all communication problems. Probably she felt that this being a flight to China does not warrant for the smiling attitudes.
"Hope that Singapore Airport will maintain and upkeep the good image that we have come this far."
