PRC polytechnic student bribed policeman with $20 after being caught bring girlfriend to hotel to have sex
June 20th, 2011 | Author: Temasek Review

A 20 year old polytechnic student from mainland China has been convicted of trying to bribe a policeman with $20, according to a report by a lowly Chinese tabloid yesterday.

The PRC student by the name of Zheng Lin had checked into budget hotel to have sex with his PRC girlfriend when he was stopped from doing so by three officers doing random spot checks.

When the policemen took down their particulars, Zheng took out $20 and gave it to one of the policemen, requesting them to remove their particulars. He was then arrested on the spot.

Despite the gravity of the offence, being a ‘foreign talent’, Zheng is only sentenced to nine months’ probation and 130 hours of community service instead of a jail term which is the usual case though the prosecution has lodged an appeal, arguing that Zheng should see some jail time of at about two to three months.

It is not revealed if Zheng is studying at Temasek Polytechnic on MOE scholarship.

Bribery of cops is a common ‘practice’ in China where a couple of hundreds of dollars can save one plenty of unnecessary ‘trouble’.

The PAP should consider starting a course to educate these newcomers from China on Singapore’s laws lest they start importing their ‘5000-year old culture’ into Singapore.

I don't get this. There is absolutely nothing wrong with what the couple did. If the bribe was to avoid the particulars being recorded, the officer should explain that no offence had taken place that it was routine. When is it right to barge into the room. There must be reasonable grounds to go check rooms and ask particulars. The AG needs to explain this case.

TOC should seek an explanation via an article.

They have these dogs who will fake any story necessary. If you read their contents, you can see those people do not know math and logic. The idea is to sensationalize.

It is more likely a cultural clash. In china, the 公安 don't have to give a reason to start questioning you. Bribing them out is usually the norm in china. He probably thought its the same in Singapore, and started handing $20 once he saw them asking questions.

The judges are very kind hearted. They know it takes time for the FTs to be accepted into the community. The judge its doing its part in welcoming them.
