Student at NTU found dead in hall of residence

A student attending a bridging programme at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) was found dead in one of its halls of residence late on Friday night.

Shin Min Daily News identified the student as 20-year-old Lan Xing Ye, who is from Fujian province in China. The paper reported that her roommate returned to the room they shared on the sixth floor of Hall 13 on Friday night to find her motionless on her bed, with a plastic bag over her head.

Police were alerted to the incident at 12:05am, and are currently investigating the case, which they have classified as an unnatural death.

In an email circulated to students in the late afternoon on Saturday, NTU president Bertil Andersson confirmed the incident, saying preliminary police investigations showed there was no sign of forced entry, and that Lan showed no other visible injuries.

He further added that NTU is extending all support and assistance to her family.

The paper also reported that Lan first came to Singapore to study slightly more than a year ago, in December 2010. She reportedly won a scholarship with the Ministry of Education (MOE) and was supposed to choose her major this year after her bridging course at the university, which she started after moving into its hostel a month ago.

Lan was also said to have given tuition in her spare time, advertising for students online, possibly for the payment of her school fees.

Her friends told Shin Min that she was cheerful, and showed no signs of any problems in her interactions with them. They speculated, however, that it is possible she may have been stressed from the pressure to do well academically given the performance requirements for MOE scholars here.

In a statement, an NTU spokesperson said that professional counsellors with the school are assisting Lan's family, friends, coursemates and residents at Hall 13 who may need help coping with the emotional impact of the tragedy.

"Together with NTU’s President, the management, faculty, staff and students would like to express our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family of the deceased, her course mates and friends during this very trying time," he added.

If she was on a scholarship then her tuition fees were obviously paid for. This is a given with the PAPies and their PAF policies. Let's not hoodwink and take advantage of an innocent person's life ... and death!

According to the report in Shin Min today (Apr 26), the second-year NTU Bioengineering student was found by her hostel mate with a 'knife in her head' yesterday afternoon.

The police said:

"Police received a call on April 25 at about 1.10pm informing us that a woman was found lying motionless at 21 Nanyang Circus.

"The body of a 21 year old woman was found at the location.

"She was taken to NUH with injuries. Police are investigating."

STOMPer Lily, who also studies at NTU, was shocked when she read about the case. She said:

"Was she so stressed?

"I heard that a knife and scissors were found in the room, and the girl sustained lacerations on her wrists and scratches on her neck.

"She's a resident at Hall 1 Block 16.

"People are talking about the 'knife in her head', which is really scary, but I think it's just a rumour until official investigations confirm it."


If she's a chiobu then it is really a waste for her to kill herself.

Another example of the Pappy scholar theory gone wrong.
Just because a person has good academic qualifications does not mean he/she will do well in life and contribute to society.

What the pappy has conveniently forgotten is that most of the locals are descended from immigrants who have weathered extreme
hardship in life to travel from China, India, Indonesia/Malaysia ect2 to battle for survival in a diesease infected hot equatorial region.
Thousands died on the way here and we are the proud decendents of a tough breed of people .

Now the pappy just go to China and India to bring in directly people with academic abilities many of whoes families may not even have travelled out of their province before. They may therefore be of poor " stock" as can be seen from the many cases of death amongst foreign students in Singapore.I 'm willing to bet that many of these families and their kids will not survive if they have to go through the same path as locals and are here only because of the 20% places reserved for these kids.
As for those Pinoys brought in by the truckloads-just wait and you will find that at least 80% of their kids will go to ITE.Did anyone notice the many Filipino men in Singapore walking around in basketball attire with no jobs looking after kids and doing housework while their wives work and support them .How are any of these specimen better than locals. Talents?

If these Pinoys, Mainland Chinese and Indians FT are so smart, how come their countries are so backward?

Those scholars who support such policies of creating an easy path for foreigners are actually betraying the memories of their ancestors who made great sacrifices and underwent great sufferings so their descendents can have a better life.

This is a tried, tested and failed formula. They are hoping that 1 or 2 fish will stay after feeding 100. The fact is most of them (exception are the rare chiobu scholar who kena bio by Sinkie guy) form enclaves and rarely mix with local students..... and don't dream of staying on in Singapore, unlike students in Australia or the USA who hope to stay on and make good in these countries

If point for point match in entry requirement with sinkies applicant, sinkies applicants should be given scholarship & allowance up to graduation of their PhD! The scholarships are given to these dogs just because they applied for it & that is all! This is how our tax money are being screwed & sinkies still have to pay full fees!
