The self-immolation of a young man in Tunisia triggered a wave of people power movement in the Middle East which has already toppled the regimes in Tunisia and Egypt.
In Singapore however, the 慼onor?of attempting to self-immolate belonged to a 43 year-old PRC woman who tried to set herself on fire after dousing herself with oil in front of the Istana yesterday afternoon, according to reports in the Chinese tabloids.
The PRC woman, known by her surname of Zhang had earlier registered her daughter to study in a private school here. For some unknown reasons, the daughter was unable to complete her studies and the school refused to refund the school fees.
Ms Zhang had wanted to seek help from the Singapore President, but ended up attempting to commit suicide by immolating herself alive. She was arrested by the police and now released on bail.
Due to the PAP抯 pro-China labor and immigration policies, mainland Chinese now form an increasing proportion of foreigners in Singapore. It is easier for a PRC migrant worker to find work and permanent residence in Singapore than in other Chinese cities like Shenzhen, Shanghai and Beijing.
Unlike Singapore抯 ethnic Chinese whose ancestors hailed largely from the southern provinces of China such as Fujian and Guangdong, the newcomers come mostly from the inner provinces with different cultures, customs and dialects.
In an interview with National Georgraphic magazine in December 2009, PAP supreme leader Lee Kuan Yew declared that it is a good thing for Singapore to welcome more Chinese immigrants as they are 慼arder-driving?and 慼arder-striving?than Singaporeans.
