'You expect me to live forever?'

President Nathan, when asked if he would stand for re-election next year

President S R Nathan opened his eyes wide when asked if he would stand for re-election next year.
'I'm 87 years of age, you expect me to live forever?' he quipped when asked if he plans to run for a third term in office.
Mr Nathan turns 87 when the presidential election is due next year.
He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a gathering of some 200 Singaporeans at a tea reception in Shanghai yesterday.
With a year to go before his current six-year term ends on Aug 31 next year, Mr Nathan has found himself frequently asked by the Singapore media about his next step.
So this time, he was not surprised.
'I've got a feeling I'll get a question like this,' he said, before moving on to a different topic about overseas Singaporeans' links to home.
Although confirming nothing, the President's answer yesterday was the strongest hint yet that he will not run for a third term.
Mr Nathan was first elected in 1999 and re-elected in 2005.
Described as the 'People's President' for his friendly and open demeanour, Mr Nathan mingled for more than half an hour at the tea reception with Singaporeans, who crowded around to shake his hand and pose for pictures with him.
