Mr Yoga, a Singapore PR, aims to run in Indonesian
election. (ST Photo).

An Indonesian who is a Singapore PR, Yoga Dirga Cahya, 26, hopes to run in
the next Indonesian election. His candidacy was confirmed by the National
Mandate Party, a party under the current ruling coalition, last month.

The Indonesian election is slated to take place on 9 Apr next year.

Mr Yoga came to Singapore at 18 in 2004, to study in NTU with the aid of a
MOE tuition grant. In return for getting the grant, he served a 3 year bond at
NEA after his graduation. He has been in Singapore for the past 9 years and is
still working for NEA. He plans to leave NEA in Jul so that he can focus on his
Indonesian election campaign. He disclosed that his campaign will run online and
in Jarkarta where he will focus on issues such as good governance, a clean
Parliament and better rule of law.

He said, “Many Singaporeans go overseas and get the best education, and they
come home and work and contribute to their society. I wish to do the same for
mine.”

“There is this entrenched perception among Indonesians that politics is
dirty. But if nobody wants to step up and kick-start change, then naturally no
change will occur.”

According to the National Day Rally Speech made by PM Lee in 2010 [Link],
he said, “Immigrants, the PRs and the citizens are far fewer. We are very
careful whom we accept. Not only must they contribute to our economy but they
have also got to integrate with our society and strike roots
here
.”

Also, according the Population White Paper [Link]
endorsed by the 77 PAP MPs in Parliament:

“Permanent residence (PR) is granted to those who have a long-term stake in
Singapore and who intend to sink roots here. It is an intermediate step through
which foreigners take up citizenship in Singapore.”

“We will grant about 30,000 PRs each year, in order to maintain the PR
population at between 0.5 and 0.6 million for a stream of good quality
candidates for citizenship (15,000 and 25,000 new citizens each
year).”
Since Mr Yoga intends to run for election in Indonesia and wants to go back
home to contribute to his Indonesian society, it appears that he has no
intention to sink roots in Singapore.

And since the purpose of PR is for foreigners to sink roots in Singapore and
eventually become a citizen in the long term, shouldn’t the Singapore Govt start
taking away the permanent residency of those who have “signalled” that they
wouldn’t be sinking roots here, after given a chance?

They can always be given a work pass to continue to work in Singapore instead
of PR.

Yoga Dirga Cahya of Malay stock not likely to sink roots, giving out a tuition grant and PR to him is a waste of public funds.

Singapore Govt should give PR to (1) Malaysian Chinese (2) Indonesian Chinese (3) Pinoy Chinese

These 3 groups, particularly Malaysian Chinese will sink roots.

Dark skin pinoys, hard to predict they will sink roots, if they have good job here, maybe will sink roots here because Pinoyland is crap.

As for Ah Tiongs, it is hard to say whether they will sink roots or not, despite of being the chinese stock.

you are wrong on all counts.......Pinoy, Indo and chinks all want to go back home...if not then to first world countries like US, UK, Australia/NZ....in that order.
Indo chinks are most likely to migrate to the first world countries than chinks from other countries.
Malaysian chinks also want to go back home to retire......those that stay are those likely married to singaporeans.

Ok lor, you are right lor :p

Back to some serious business, not all people can go to first world countries like US, UK, Australia/NZ... Going to first world countries is not like play marble, wan.. If all can go like that, then sinkies would be the first to go.

So for those that don't qualify to go to first world countries like US, UK, Australia/NZ....in that order, lol, they will have to sink roots in Singapore. Thus Singapore Govt should give PR to (1) Malaysian Chinese (2) Indonesian Chinese (3) Pinoy Chinese....in that order, lol, these 3 groups, particularly Malaysian Chinese will sink roots.

99 percent of foreigners here have no intention to make sinkapore their eternal home. When the time is right, they will leave after sucking every ounce of gold they can find here. No foreigner real give a damn about sinkapore citizenship; many can easily get back their former citizenship.

Why, in this day and age, is any individual expected to sink roots in an artificially created border on what is already a very small and congested planet.

What's wrong with the concept of being a citizen of earth and exercising the freedoms that modern methods of travel and communication have enabled us to enjoy at will.

Is someone who works for a couple of years in say London, then moves to New York, then to Singapore for 4 to 5 years, then to Sydney and then to Iceland or Timbuktu any less worthy in some way than someone who spends all his life in one small city stuck in a rut??

Citizen of Earth is not enough for some, especially this chap below who wants to be Master of the Universe.n:D

Typical of that kind of fuigitve/opportunist dog FT that this stewpig pap govt luuuurrrvvvesss........

Nobody is saying this? "using taxpayers money, to benefit other people's country citizens"?? it is not being a universal citizen or what. There is no accountability of their actions putting their own people at an disadvantage..is this what we want??

The government will argue that this is money well spent and he is the perfect example of why we should be doing so. If he becomes a minister in Indonesia, we hope that he may remember our generosity and be kind to Singapore when it comes to law/ policy making.

That is a very big "IF".

In fact, he may most likely agree with the mentality like most Chinese freeloaders (some that history taught us how the Japanese viewed the Chinese because of their generosity) - that we are a weak nation, does not deserved any success and eating our lunches are like taking candy from children.

Well done, PAP.

The scholarship and the job he has should have gone to a singaporean instead of a foreigner,..fuck PAP and thanks 60%

Going into politics is big business lah. I have talked to businessmen in the Philiipines & they tell me that their ultimate aim is to get into politics & make $$$$.
Even in Spore we have LKY who has amassed so much $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ that he has to hide it:o

"Good luck" to this dumbass if he thinks politics is clean never in PAP politics and more so never in Indonesian politics. A real dumbass I guess its too much sinkie education.

If he fails and offend the rival political groups, he can easily come back to singkieland and the pap will welcome him with open arms.

if you had bothered to read the actual article, you would have learnt that Yoga Dirga Cahya intends to run for the overseas seat and represent overseas indonesians.

What about new/naturalized citizens who hold dual citizenship? Are they considered to be loyal to Sinkieland?

What about the two boys of Yakult Ibrahim? Suppose they serve NS, but they still hold on to their US passports? Are they loyal to Sinkapore?
