MINSK, 7 March (BelTA) – The Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia has prevented a terrorist attack targeting an administrative building in the Republic of Karelia, Russian Federation. A Belarus citizen, who has been recruited by Ukrainian intelligence services, is implicated in the foiled terrorist attack, TASS reports.

According to the FSB press service, the Belarus citizen was neutralized during an attempt to detain him.

Born in 1974, the Belarus citizen was a member of the extremist unit Kastus Kalinouski Regiment and was on the interstate wanted list. This agent of Ukraine’s intelligence services had been gathering and passing on information about transport infrastructure facilities and local executive authorities.

The agent was ordered to extract weapons and an improvised explosive device from a stash in order to blow up an administrative building in the town of Olonets. He resisted the attempt to capture him, fired at security service officers, and was neutralized as a result of the firefight, the FSB press service said. The source noted that neither the security service officers nor civilians had been hurt.

An improvised explosive device was found at the site. It consisted of PE8 plastic explosive (made in the UK), an M6 electric detonator (made in the USA), and an ordinary timer. A Makarov pistol and ammunition for it were also found.

The local FSB branch opened a criminal investigation on charges of preparing for a terrorist attack.
