A 56-year-old man will face prosecution in court for assaulting an officer from the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) last November.



The incident took place at about 10.30am on Nov 6 at MSF's Social Service Office in Toa Payoh.

A police statement on Jan 5 said that the man had gone to seek aid and turned aggressive during an interview with the 34-year-old MSF officer. He started hitting the victim before being stopped by other MSF officers.

The suspect was subsequently arrested by police officers from Tanglin Division who had responded to the incident.

MSF had released a statement on Nov 17 last year confirming that a female officer was assaulted and she had received treatment at a hospital for her injuries.

Minister for Social and Family Development Tan Chuan-Jin had also addressed the incident in a Facebook post that same day.

In his post, he stated that while he understood "the anxiety" of some who are served by MSF, "there is a line that just cannot be crossed."

He added: "I will not tolerate any behaviour by anyone that causes harm to my officers.

"We will do our utmost to protect them in the course of their duties."

If found guilty, he may face a jail term of up to seven years, and be fined and caned.

I have a very poor & dim impression of these grassroots activists & those working in the community help for I have assisted people going there for help. They are arrogant, pompous, b@#%#%d & muttha f$#$^%&ers......nearly 'smashed' one, like this man did. I swear, I hope I won't have to go through this again, fortunately we count our blessings that people cannot get access to forearms so easily as in USA...or many of these, would had been shot dead ages ago...

I am not saying this just to 'add fuel to fire'....one have to really be in that shoes to encounter such people.......& this is not a joke...it takes a lot of self-control not to get violent...of course, we understand, the other side of the coin..but to be arrogant, pompous.....is too much! , can get BBQ like ah seng....

I do not need to lick & suck the PAP....but, there were illiterate people whom I am obliged to help to get some assistance & were in dire straits...other, than that I would rather avoid those obnoxious 'dogs'....

Josephus Tan is one of our poster boy for grassroots people - successful in his career, yet willing to do volunteer work and is a staunch PAP party activist. Nobody I know thinks he is arrogant or pompous. Most grassroots and pap activists are humble and willing to help.

Volunteerism needs to be grounded in reality. While most people don't do grassroots works for money, most would like a token of appreciation of non-monetary form. We provide that in the form of cards, dinners and certificates. Most grassroots people are good folk.
