Police seeking info on latest acid splashing case

AMPANG: Police have urged anyone with information on the latest acid splashing case here – this time involving a lone female victim – to come forward immediately.
Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Amiruddin Jamaluddin said there was a lack of leads as the victim could not give her statement to police due to her current condition.
On Sunday morning, the 31-year-old woman was attacked by two men at a traffic light junction at Ampang Point.
She was on her way home when she was approached by the men on a motorcycle, who threw corrosive liquid on her face before fleeing.
“CCTV footage that we have acquired has also proven futile as the incident occurred beyond the coverage of the cameras in the area.
“We need to strike while the iron is hot and catch these culprits immediately, and those with information must come forward and talk to us now,” said ACP Amiruddin yesterday.
Meanwhile, Selangor acting police chief Deputy Comm A. Thaiveegan said police believed they had identified one of the suspects involved.
“We are tracing his whereabouts at this very moment,” he said.
Investigations revealed that the woman, who is in a critical condition after being warded at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital, did not have a boyfriend or had any disagreement with people she knew.
When met at the hospital, the woman’s mother, who refused to be named, said her daughter could only wave at her.
“She whispered to me not to be sad and I just couldn’t control my emotions,” she said in between sobs.
“My daughter almost lost her sight and her face is burnt. I hope the police will catch these monsters soon.”
In a three-month reign of terror beginning March 2011, a man attacked more than 20 people with acid in Klang Valley.
The attacks stopped after police released a photofit of the culprit two months later but the suspect was never caught.
