Police Rescue Kidnapped Yogyakarta Entrepreneur
By Bayu Marhaenjati on 12:26 pm October 20, 2013.
Yogyakarta entrepreneur Endro Atmoko, who police said was kidnapped by loan sharks on Monday after he failed to repay some 4.5 billion rupiah ($400,000) in alleged regional election bribes, was discovered by police and returned to safety this morning and his accused captors taken into custody.
“There has been a case of kidnapping and stripping of one’s freedom,” said Adj. Sr. Cmr. Herry Heryawan, a Jakarta police official. “The victim is Endro Atmoko. The perpetrators’ [initials] are B.D. and S.H.”
Endro, 54, was held captive and beaten for six days in a dispute over illegal loans he allegedly received on behalf of a 2010 local election campaign in East Java, police said.
B.D. and S.H. allegedly beat Endro and threatened him with a fake gun after meeting him to discuss the debt at the Lebak Bulus mosque in Cilandak, South Jakarta on Monday.
The attackers took Endro’s wallet, gagged him, handcuffed him and put him in a car, according to police.
“The victim was brought to a house in Keranggan Lembur village, Bekasi [and was held there] from Oct. 14 through Oct. 19,” Herry said.
Two other alleged perpetrators are still on the run. Police have not formally named B.D. or S.H. as suspects and have not charged Endro with any crimes in relation to the alleged illegal loans.
Police said that they are looking for someone with the initials B.T., who allegedly ordered the kidnapping.
The campaign, police said, promised B.T. kickbacks in the form of local contracts after the election, but never followed through.
“So, B.T. ordered B.D. to ask the victim to repay the debts,” Herry said.
Police have not yet said how they carried out the rescue or disclosed the name of the campaign for which Endro was allegedly raising funds.
