Nine people have been arrested for operating and gaming in an illegal gambling den which had been passed off as an association.

In a six-hour operation on Sept 13, officers raided the illegal gambling den located at Geylang Road.

Nine men aged between 36 and 61 years were arrested.

Preliminary investigations revealed that one of the suspects, a 61-year-old man, operated the illegal gambling den while the rest of the suspects were patrons.

Four electronic mahjong tables and 15 sets of mahjong tiles were seized during the raid.

The nine suspects will be charged in court on Sept 17.

If convicted, the gambling den operator faces a fine of between $5,000 and $50,000, and a jail term of up to three years. If convicted, those found guilty of gaming in an illegal gambling den face a fine of up to $5,000, a jail term of up to six months, or both.

Commander of Bedok Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police How Kwang Hwee said: "We will continue to hit hard at these places which operate as illegal gambling dens under the guise of operating as an association.

Those who knowingly allow their business premises or residential units to be used for such unlawful activities can also expect to face the full brunt of the law if they are found to be liable."
