Police nab drink-drivers

SINGAPORE: Police arrested 10 drink-drivers in a four-hour island-wide operation between midnight and 4am on Friday.
The drivers were arrested at roadblocks set up along Braddell Road, Fort Road, Loyang Avenue, Outram Road, Republic Boulevard, Sims Way, Upper Bukit Timah Road and Yishun Avenue.
In the course of the operation, Traffic Police administered the breathalyser test to 63 motorists.
Ten of them, aged between 28 and 54 years, failed the test and were arrested for drink-driving.
The highest breathalyser result clocked was 83 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, more than two times the prescribed legal limit of 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.
Police remind motorists that drink-drivers, on conviction, will be disqualified from driving for at least 12 months.
They may lose their driving licences and have to retake the theory and practical driving tests in order to obtain their driving licences again.
In addition, first-time offenders can be fined between S$1,000 and S$5,000, or jailed up to six months.
Repeat offenders may be punished with a maximum fine of S$30,000 and a mandatory jail term of up to three years.
They may also be caned up to six strokes should death or serious injury be caused.
