Police looking for snatch thief

SINGAPORE: Police said they are investigating a case of snatch theft at Block 88 Redhill Close, which took place at about noon on Tuesday.

The victim, a Chinese woman in her mid 70s, was walking along the block when a man came from behind to snatch her handbag. However, the man was unsuccessful and fled the scene.

He was last seen wearing a light coloured T-shirt, cargo pants and a light-coloured cap.

He is described as having a fair complexion and is about 1.7 metres tall.

Police say they activated the dog unit to help search for the suspect at the said block, but he was nowhere to be found.

Police had cordoned off parts of the area to look for the thief, but removed the cordon afterwards.

Snatch theft suspect nabbed after manhunt

SINGAPORE: Police arrested a 52-year-old man on Wednesday morning for suspected snatch theft after a manhunt.

He was arrested after a member of the public provided valuable leads on his identity.

Police said the victim, a 75-year-old woman, was walking at the void deck of Block 88 in Redhill Close at about noon on Tuesday when the suspect came from behind and tried to snatch her handbag.

The suspect failed and fled the scene.

Police officers searched the areas around Block 88 and cordoned off the lift lobby.

At one point, there were over 10 police vehicles in the area, including two vans from the Police Dog Unit.

As officers led dogs around the area to try to sniff out the suspect's trail, curious residents crowded around the block.

The breakthrough came when enquiries with a member of the public provided valuable information about the suspect's identity.

Police arrested the suspect at a unit in Block 88 at about 1.45am on Wednesday.

He will be charged in court on Thursday.

Thief who escaped 5-hour manhunt at Redhill Close jailed a year

The 51-year-old man involved in an attempted snatch theft in Redhill Close in August - which led to a five-hour police manhunt - was jailed a year on Thursday.

A district court heard that Tay Khai Hua was arrested on the same day of the attempted theft after a witness spotted a backpack left at the scene of the crime and told police it could be Tay's.

The unemployed man had tried to grab the handbag of Madam Chua Geok Dee, 75, as she was walking home from the Bukit Merah Centra polyclinic at 12pm on Aug 23. The feisty woman hung to it while shouting for help.

Startled, Tay gave up and fled. Two passers-by gave chase and caught up with him at the lift lobby of Block 88 Redhill Close.
