A pimp syndicate has surfaced in Geylang, and its members are now extorting money from streetwalkers.
An informer, Li, who is active in the Geylang area, informed reporters that such a syndicate is trying to take charge of all the hookers in Geylang, and is demanding "protection money" from them.
According to Li, the pimp syndicate consists of many members, who will fan out into Geylang's streets to check for streetwalkers.
When the men encounter a streetwalker, they will demand $300 from her for "protection". Those who refuse to pay are chased away and not allowed to continue with their business.
In return, the men act as lookouts and alert the women to police raids.
They also help the hookers when they have trouble with customers, such as those who refuse to pay after receiving "service".
However, Li added that such information on police raids is already available to hookers for a lower fee of $100 a month from current "sources".
