Hougang an "uphill fight" for PAP: PM Lee

SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has described the Hougang by-election as an "uphill fight" for the People's Action Party (PAP).

He said PAP candidate Desmond Choo was putting up a very good fight and he hoped Hougang residents would give him a chance.

Speaking to the media after a walkabout with Mr Choo on Saturday, Mr Lee felt there was goodwill among the residents in the single-member constituency.

Mr Lee stressed that the by-election was serious business for residents.

It was for them to choose who could be the best candidate and the best Member of Parliament to represent them and look after them in the ward, he said.

Mr Lee also responded to WP's line that the Hougang by-election was serious business for the party.

He said if that was indeed so, the Workers' Party should have put up a good candidate for the constituency in the General Election held in May last year.

Mr Lee also said having alternative voices in Parliament was not the reason the Hougang by-election was called.

"Whether you have one extra in Hougang or one less in Hougang it doesn't change the basic picture in Parliament," Mr Lee said.

"That was not the reason why Hougang's by-election was called. Hougang's by-election is being called because there was a malfunction inside the Workers' Party and therefore they had no choice but to do this."

He said the by-election was really about voting for the best candidate to serve residents, commenting on the Workers' Party's call to residents to vote for the Workers' Party and keep Hougang a "bastion of democracy".

Mr Lee, who is also the PAP's Secretary-General, said there are already eight opposition MPs in Parliament and another nine Nominated MPs.

"The voters in Hougang should consider carefully, not blindly, but carefully who is the best candidate, who can best represent them well, who will work best for them and has the strongest backing and look after them and that is the the way democracy is meant to work," Mr Lee said.

"Democracy does not mean voting blindly. Democracy means thinking carefully and choosing each time for the Party and the candidate who can serve you the best and that is what real democracy is."

"And if you have change, you have to change," Mr Lee added.

As for the candidate, Mr Choo, he said he will focus on visiting residents in the coming days "because I can listen to their concerns, address them there and then".

"A rally is for me to reach out to a wider group, outline my vision," he said. "But nothing beats being able to share with individuals, (find out) what are your plans and get the feedback directly."

"You don't get that kind of response when you go to a rally. You just talk to the people; they don't get the chance to get back to you and say, 'now this is what my hopes and fears are'," he added.

"So, you'll still find me concentrating on house visits, concentrating hard on the markets and coffee shops, very one to one, very personal."

The PAP will hold its first rally on Sunday at 7pm at Hougang Stadium.

So the PAP was right when they chose to align themselves with the Barisan Socialis? Was that democracy? Daddy said a different view of democracy

Oh, sure Mr Choo.

I had also voiced my concerns to the PAP candidate when he visited me before GE2011 but when he got elected into Parliament, he conveniently forgot all about the issues which I had raised with him.

also take many pictures of old uncles and aunties fed by PA eating at the rally. Then take many photos of the long stretch of buses parked out PA blocks and at the road sides and car parks outside the PAP rally ground. Shame them of being dodgy at election time. You think this 90 y.o. old dog will be at the rally? and intimidating voters again?

LHL will have to put a masking tape around his old fart mouth during this few days to stop his old fart from intimidating Hg voters.

DC appears to be working the ground very hard. Feedback so far has been quite positive. This is from Yahoo:

Close that chapter, let’s move on. That was essentially the message that Hougang by-election candidate Desmond Choo told reporters at a press conference Friday afternoon at Hougang PAP branch office at block 328.

Referring to the case of former WP and Hougang MP Yaw Shin Leong, who was expelled from the party after allegations of marital indiscretions, the People’s Action Party said, “To me, Yaw Shin Leong’s chapter is a closed chapter. I’ve said that very early on… It remains so.”

“It’s ultimately a campaign between two candidates. They’re not going to choose between Png Eng Huat and Yaw Shin Leong. It’s going to be Png Eng Huat and Desmond – and this is what this contest is going to be about.”

On Friday, Yaw broke his four-month silence when he addressed a personal letter to Hougang voters, where he apologized for the scandal and urged them to continue supporting WP.

When asked if he though the letter would sway the hearts of the Hougang residents, Choo said, “I’m not sure [about Yaw’s influence on the residents] and I haven’t spoken to them about this but I think the residents will be mindful that they want a candidate that can really help them solve the issue in the long run, and who’s always there for them and will be for them. I think that’s what they’ll take into account and that’s how we’re going to approach this election, this campaign.”

He added, “No matter what Yaw Shin Leong said, I wish him all the best. I’m glad he’s going to start his life anew, and I’ve only best wishes for him.”

By saying that YSL is a closed chapter, and wishing him well, he demonstrated magnanimity. At the same time, DC is clever by not hitting YSL (at least not directly), but nonetheless ensure that HG people don't forget what YSL has done, by merely mentioning "Yaw Shin Leong". YSL incident is toxic for WP and if PAP play the game well, by not over-harping on it, it can win them quite a number of votes without breaking a sweat.

I think DC did well in this media engagement. If he continues with the momentum in this BE, who knows, maybe an upset is coming?

what nonsense is this? he has a choice everyone has a choice. nobody is forcing him to cast a candidate to make political traction in HG. or like that marlboro tan would put it, no body is pointing a gun on his head. and that would have saved taxpayer's money also.

Is having LHL by his side an advantage or disadvantage for Desmond?

DC dare not condemn YSL for his incident cos his uncle was found guilty of an even worse offence.

bwahahahahahahaa... you really crack me up! imagine the ultimate combo: pinky, cow and zorro...

hard to say. stand also die, don't stand by side also die - if critic want to whack means can whack e.g. he is spineless and need pm to back him or look even his own pm don't back him!

It cuts both ways so you need to play this game very carefully.

With PM by his side, it clearly shows PAP endorsement at the almost highest level (perhaps not as high as LKY turning up). There'll be voters who are encouraged by this and while it may not engender a leap of faith, it certainly helps DC's image as a worthy candidate. At the same time, DC said he's his own man so he needs to demonstrates independent thinking, free will and not hang on to PM's coattail. Otherwise people may say you maciam mummy's boy.

At this moment, it looks like PM's endorsement is helping DC. Plus DC comes across as confident, especially infront of the media. So far no wrong steps by DC.

No lah.The best favour the Old Man can do for his son is to turn up at HG rally and tell HG voters to double confirm they will REPENT for another 20 years. That will sure make DC lose his deposit.

The damage was done 20 years ago when LTK won. Thereafter, PAP strategies of threats and more threats, deprivation and more deprivation, intimidation, bullying, neglect etc made it almost impossible to win back HG. Am sure they didn't expect HG voters to remain 'stainless steel' despite shameful efforts to corrupt them.

That's why legacy is damn powerful. WP has more than 20 years of entrenchment in HG and it's very difficult to dislodge them.

Lucky they didn't get their 'lucky talisman' to come to Hougang again, the "wooden GO", everytime he turns up, the pedulum swing ever wider!! ha ha ha
