Mr Li Hong Yi and Mr Yu Yin Soon heard her shouting for help and managed to detain the suspect after a chase.

SINGAPORE: Two foreign workers have been commended by the police for helping a 51-year-old woman in Jurong West to chase down and detain an armed robber before authorities arrived.

The incident took place on Saturday (Feb 20) at about 1.55pm, said the police. The victim had been walking along Jurong West Street 65 when she was robbed of her handbag, containing cash and valuables amounting to about S$810.

The suspect was believed to have armed himself with a paper cutter. After the victim shouted for assistance, the two men, Mr Li Hong Yi and Mr Yu Yin Soon, who TODAY understands are both work permit holders, gave chase and detained the suspect. Police then arrived to arrest the suspect after being alerted of the incident.

Mr Li, who is in his 20s, and Mr Yu, who is in his 40s, were both commended by the Commander of Jurong Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Koh Wei Keong for their “selflessness and public-spiritedness”.

The suspect will be charged in Court on Monday with an offence of Armed Robbery under Section 392 read with 397 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. The suspect could be imprisoned up to 14 years and receive up to 12 strokes of cane.
