Hi guys,

How much more expensive are prices of private hospitals compared to govt hospitals, and is it possible for doctors to provide a consultation without seeing the patient?

Long story short, my grandpa has a heart condition from ages back and has a battery installed. He was diagnosed with stage 3A lung cancer in 2008. After chemo and various treatments, the cancer went into remission.

Everything was fine until recently, when he started to feel breathless. The doctor at SGH found that his left lung was filled with fluid and recommended he go for a fluid extraction procedure, when he then underwent. After he was discharged for 2 days, he started to feel breathless again and was admitted into hospital after another 5 days. They found fluid in his lungs again.

The doctors at SGH are not sure which of his conditions - cancer/heart failure - could have caused the fluid accumulation and have recommended he go for a heart procedure. But they are not sure if it is the root issue of the problem and I am frustrated by their apparent cluelessness. To make matters worse, his oncologist went for reservist!! And his doctor said that before he can go for the procedure, he has to go for tests that will take 2/3 weeks.. that is very long as he is feeling extremely unwell :(

My grandfather is now unable to walk, so it would not be easy to get a hospital transfer. Is it possible for doctors to provide a consultation without seeing him? Also, are private hospitals really that much better than govt ones?

Any advice will be much appreciated :(
