I have my preferences as far as the Presidential candidates are concerned, but I am horrified by the thought that S R Nathan could run for a third term. If he faces a contest against anyone (be it George Yeo, Tan Kin Lian, Tan Cheng Bock or Tony Tan), he will almost definitely lose.

However, he can still be "elected" in the same way as in the past 2 elections, i.e. by walkover after the other candidates are disqualified.

I am totally against S R Nathan being the President of Singapore. For the following reasons:

1) He is already 87 years old. Whether he is in good health or not, isn't the point. Should Singapore be sending an 87 year old to meet foreign dignitaries and heads of state? What does that say about our democracy, that we need octogenerians to remain in office long after their expiry dates? Lee Kuan Yew has already stepped down, so why should S R Nathan continue in office?

2) He has done absolutely nothing while in office.

3) His past achievements seem to be unimpressive. His only claim to fame is having been director of the top-secret SID (not to be confused with ISD). SID is the equivalent of the CIA and the KGB in Singapore. Let's just say that it's not a job that will be given to anyone other than the staunchest loyalists of the establishment's inner core. I'm not even talking about being a PAP loyalist here, I'm talking about being a loyalist of the inner core of the PAP, and by that you should know who I mean. That doesn't say much for his ability to be independent.

4) He is not capable of unifying the country. Singapore is now more polarised than ever. Not on racial/religious grounds, but on grounds of class and ideology. The income gap is wider than ever. The establishment elites are desperate to hang on to the status quo because it has served them well. On the other hand, everyone else (including the upper middle class elites) are desperate for change. S R Nathan's only hope of unifying Singapore is by being a President that is roundly despised by all walks of life, including the elites. I am not exaggarating when I am saying that he could be the most unpopular Singapore President of all time.

I don't care if the President has links to the PAP or not. I don't care if he is endorsed by the PAP, WP, SDP or any party. I don't care how much he is paid, or what track record he has. So long as the next President is not S R Nathan. He is simply the most uninspiring leader that any country could possibly have. I can't think of one person I know who likes him.

I hope he runs; only then he will know his own popularity.
He will lose his deposit if he runs.
