Taipei, May 1 (CNA) Five Philippine nationals -- four women and one man -- have been deported for a series of thefts they committed in Taipei last month, according to officials of the Taipei City Police Department's Xinyi Precinct.

One person reported to the precinct April 23 that a smartphone had been stolen in the Wufenpu Shopping District, not far from Songshan Railway Station.

Upon checking surveillance cameras, the police found that the smartphone had been stolen by five foreign women.

Through further checking of surveillance cameras, the police found the five "women" in a hotel in Wanhua District, along with nine stolen smartphones.

It was later discovered that one of the thieves was actually a man impersonating a woman, the police said. The five were in Taiwan as tourists.
