Penang to ban foreign cooks to preserve 'local' food heritage

Patrons at a food centre at Pasar Bukit Mertajam in Butterworth, Penang. Penang is set to implement a ban on foreign workers working as the main cook in the hawker food business in order to protect the state's food heritage.

GEORGE TOWN - Penang is set to implement a ban on foreign workers working as the main cook in the hawker food business in order to protect the state's food heritage.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said hawker licences were only given to locals but the local council had found out that there were a few hawkers who employed foreigners as their main cooks, according to Bernama news agency.

It quoted Lim as saying the local council was currently gathering feedback from the public relating to the matter, adding that the implementation could take place as soon as early next year,

"We are considering revoking their hawker licences if they are found to engage foreigners to work as their main cook but we need to get public feedback before we proceed with the implementation," he told reporters on Saturday.

I thought south east asians heritage came from foreign immigrants from neighboring countries?

Otherwise where can you get Indian food or Chinese food?

Last time the PAP had age restrictions for those who wanted to become hawkers. Don't know if this is still true. The minimum age was 40 years old because the PAP wanted the young to work in factories & not as hawkers.

If you are a young hawker it is also difficult if you have to do in-camp.

I ran away fr a jap restaurant when I saw an Ah Neh cook!!
That is my way........... also withdrew biz from companies which hired FTs over LTs!!!you d!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you noticed the PRC are cooking local food at the Hawker ctr now?

too late. all cooks in restaurant kitchens are mexicans, including dim sum on weekends. you can hear mariachi music from all kitchens in california.
