Penang cops seize drugs worth RM1.1mil
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang police, together with the federal police in Bukit Aman, detained a Singaporean, suspected to be the mastermind of an international drug trafficking syndicate, during three successive raids in the city last Friday.
Four other accomplices, comprising two China nationals and two locals, were picked up in the raids, which netted an assortment of drugs worth about RM1.1mil.
The 33-year-old Singaporean who holds a MyKad and Indonesian and South Korean passports, was picked up in a raid about 10.40pm, at a flat in Paya Terubong.
From the Singaporean, a team of policemen seized 4.8kg of syabu, 42.7 grammes of ketamine, two grammes of heroin and 50kg of precursors (a mixture of powdered synthetic drugs).
State police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi told reporters on Monday, that the flat was believed to have served as a centre for processing and distribution of drugs.
He said initial investigations revealed the Singaporean was the suspected mastermind behind the drug operations in local and overseas markets in the past six months.
Following the arrest of the Singaporean, the police nabbed four other people, including two women from China.
This followed raids on a house in Jelutong, and another at a house in Tanjong Tokong.
Abdul Rahim said police investigations indicated that the Singaporean-run syndicate was linked to another which the police had routed on Nov 2, at an apartment in Jelutong, following the seizure of drugs worth about RM14.6mil.
In that raid, a Malaysian man who had arrived from China last month was detained to facilitate investigations.
Abdul Rahim said the Singaporean, two China nationals and two local men had been remanded until Thursday. - Bernama
