SINGAPORE : Community bonding - that's top on the agenda of the new chief executive of the People's Association (PA), Yam Ah Mee.
The former head of the Land Transport Authority (LTA) also wants to drive up the numbers of volunteers, especially among Singapore's youths.
16 community clubs in Singapore are screening 'live' and free of charge - all 64 World Cup matches of the month-long competition.
This has attracted more than 100,000 people so far, from all walks of life.
And the new PA chief wants to further develop such community bonding.
"People on wheelchairs, residents, new immigrants - all coming together and soaking in the atmosphere, visiting our community clubs, getting to know each other and building these bonds and friendships among themselves. This is one area we would like to continue to develop further," said PA's CEO Yam.
Other areas of priorities will be engaging youths, new citizens and foreigners.
Yam said: "The more volunteers the better... (and) we want more youths as well as working adults. Of the 4,000 new volunteers and grassroots leaders that we recruited last year, about 1,500 are young adults below 35 years old. About 400 of them are new citizens and PRs, and we would like to increase the numbers."
The People's Association is expected to release more plans at its Grassroots Convention on July 3. The event will be graced by Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
