At least one person was injured in multiple bomb attacks in Thailand’s southern province of Yala, police said on Saturday.

At least 13 small explosions struck the town of Yala late on Friday, mostly on roadsides in front of convenience stores, shops, a market, an animal hospital and a car care shop, said deputy police spokesman Kissana Phathanacharoen.

Police on Saturday found at least three unexploded improvised explosive devices, made of spray cans and metal pipes with timers attached.

Kissana said police suspect the explosions were aimed at causing a disturbance more than damage or injuries.

A decades-old separatist insurgency in predominantly Buddhist Thailand’s largely ethnic Malay-Muslim provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat has claimed the lives of more than 7,300 people since 2004, according to the Deep South Watch group which monitors the violence.

Rebel groups have called for independence for these provinces bordering Malaysia, which were part of a sultanate called Patani annexed by Thailand in 1909 as part of a treaty with Britain….

Muslims in Thailand’s south on Friday marked with prayers the 15th anniversary of the death of scores of protesters who suffocated in army trucks, an incident that galvanised unrest and remains an emblem of state impunity.
Known across the south as the “Tak Bai massacre”, the October 25, 2004 incident remains the deadliest day in the rebellion by Malay-Muslims against rule by the Thai state, which colonised the southern provinces bordering Malaysia over a century ago.

Seventy-eight people died from suffocation after they were arrested and stacked face down and hands bound behind their backs on top of each other in Thai military trucks.
Seven more were shot dead as security forces used live rounds on a large crowd of protesters who had gathered outside a police station calling for the release of several detainees.

Since then more than 7,000 people – the majority civilians, both Muslim and Buddhist – have died in near-daily shootings, ambushes and bomb blasts as rebels fight for greater autonomy from Thailand.

Despite the high death toll, the highly-localised unrest garners few international headlines.

The issue is for all conquered lands, the conquering power needs to expel the population if not heaps of trouble will happen due to domestic resistance etc. If not willing to displace the population, than don't bother to conquer. The Russkies did it well.

Thanks for the idea. I will make sure all pioneers are relocated to india, their favourite destination. If by chance the island is retaken.

The malays prefer merger with malaysia.

The Thai southern provinces were formally part of Thailand at least 60 before jiuhu was even founded. There's no legal basis for Thailand's provinces to breakaway simply because the mohameddans are religiously intolerant of the Buddhists.
