SINGAPORE: Police arrested a 42-year-old man after he was detained by passers-by and security officers of a shopping centre after stealing a gold bracelet from a jewellery shop.
The suspect entered a jewellery shop at a shopping centre in Park Road on March 25 at 4.30pm and had asked to view a gold bracelet. He then dashed out of the shop after putting the gold bracelet on his wrist.
The shop staff shouted for help which attracted the attention of two security officers of the shopping centre, who immediately chased after the suspect and were joined by other passers-by.
After a short chase, the man was cornered and that was when he whipped out a knife. However, it did not deter the group who managed to subdue him.
Police officers responded to the incident and arrested the suspect. The gold bracelet, worth $28,000, was recovered.
The suspect will be charged in court for theft and criminal intimidation. If convicted, he faces a maximum jail term of seven years for the offence of theft and two years for the offence of criminal intimidation. A Court order will be sought to remand the suspect for further investigations.
