Singapore (PPN) - In the aftermath of the recent General Elections of Singapore 2011, a resident found out that his Meet-The-People Session (MPS) with first-term PAP MP-Elect Mr Sitoh Yih Pin was an unpleasant ordeal. Mr Rai, who stays at Block 137, is a voter from the Potong Pasir Single Member Constituency, a ward held by the veteran Opposition politician Mr Chiam See Tong for more than twenty-seven years.
He went to Mr Yih Pin to seek his assistance for application for a HDB flat in the estate, where his friends and family are.
Mr Yih Pin allegedly said sarcastically, “Why don’t you ask Mr Chiam See Tong to help you? You are his helper.”
Mr Rai replied that the comment was inappropriate for a man who has recently gained power.
Mr Yih Pin then brushed the matter off by stating that “PAP does not provide property services” and that it is not within his power to write to HDB enquiring about housing for Mr Rai.
On his way out, a Sikh, who is a PAP member, then asked Mr Rai why he would come see the MP since the latter has helped out with the Opposition before. He also purportedly mentioned that Mr Rai had made a mistake, as his MPS should be on Thursdays at Block 108. Mr Rai said that Mr Yih Pin and his subordinate were both sneering as he left in despondency.
Mr Rai said that Mr Chiam has never mistreated him the way Mr Yih Pin did.
This incident has left a bad taste of PAP management among residents, with some calling for Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to intervene and discipline Mr Yih Pin for misconduct. Others even called for a fresh election in the constituency. (AB)
