EX-ROMANIAN ENVOY'S ACTIONS
Disgusted and saddened

IT SADDENS me to learn that former Romanian diplomat Silviu Ionescu has refused to return here for a coroner's inquiry in a fatal hit-and-run accident.
The circumstances surrounding the case have left many of us baffled: his sudden return to Romania immediately after the mishap, his serious illness and his baseless allegations against the Government's integrity.
Dr Ionescu is a key witness in investigations into the tragic accident, and there is nothing for him to fear if he is innocent. His assistance is imperative to ensure that justice is done in an accident that has led to the death of one person and injured two others. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is right to have strongly criticised his irresponsible attitude ('MFA slams Romanian envoy's 'callous' attitude', last Saturday).
I am disgusted that Dr Ionescu feels he is not obliged to return. Whatever the truth, the case should be pursued with vigour and there should be no let-up. We should also avoid a situation in which diplomats who commit a serious offence here can escape punishment by returning to their own country and resigning from their job.
