It seems her husband responded to the classified advertisement seeking library assistants in locations such as the Esplanade, Bedok, Geylang East and Pasir Ris.
I, too, responded to the advertisement. The person on the line said only female applicants would be considered for the job. It appears that applicants are discriminated against based on not only their age, but also their sex.
I believe the person who took my call was from a job agency, and that the requirement that the applicant be female was set by the agency and not the prospective employer.
I also responded to another advertisement seeking library assistants in western and central Singapore. I was offered a full-time job but did accept it as I wanted a part-time job nearer my home.
I am male and was then 58 years old. The job agency officer who conducted the interview did not practise any discrimination.
