PM Lee said the population size in 2030 and beyond is for a future government and generation to decide. He added that he believes Singapore's population cannot grow indefinitely.
So while a population of six million will not be sufficient to meet the needs of an ageing population, the total number of people here should be significantly below 6.9 million by 2030, and should not increase further after that.
The Government also wants the best for citizens and is hence not passing the responsibility of planning for population matters on to future leaders, he said.
It is easy to boost the local population ...just give real incentives to help locals to raise a family and offer true work-life balance. Of course, the government will say that can't be done as it doesn't have the revenue and it will hurt competitiveness. But that's bs ...reduce the generous perks given to MNCs and allow parents to share a 1-year maternity leave paid for by the government at 70 percent pay cap at $2k.
This tiny island can't accommodate 6 million. How did LHL conclude that 6 million is not sufficient? Like MP Chiam said ...there are NO independent studies to support all the contentions put forth in the White Paper.
LHL is as confused as his ministers ...sinkapore needs more than 6 million, yet it must not exceed 6.9 million. What is 'significantly below 6.9 million'? 6.1 million or 6.2 million? They don't seem to know.
The real reason why the government needs to bring in more foreigners is that if the HDB market collapses, people will vote the PAP out. Also, keep the HDB market up is essential to forestall CPF default. The cupboards are bare there.
