Who caused us to be in this position in the first place?? Graying population, not enough babies... A lot of the blame can be laid on PAP for their pop policies in the 70s and 80s. People may say it's so long ago but pop measures r like a 1000 ton locomotive. Apply the brakes and it take a lot of stopping. Also another big question need to be asked of PAP. Why were they so worried about overpopulation at that time when the pop is prob 2m+?? Why today they reverse their thinking and going for 6.9m or even 10m??

I don't think Ah Gong goofed. Back then when Singapore was still 3rd World and per capita income was much lower, most sinkie families simply couldn't afford to raise so many kids. The government also didn't have the resources it had today to educate so many kids and provide that many jobs for them. This is a problem faced by all developed societies.

This is thought does not hold water. We were at 2.7M thereabouts in population when they began the open door policy. Even without the population control and birthrate is at 2.1 or so, we will not reach 6.9m or the 5.5m we have now
