The People's Action Party is restarting its services for residents of Aljunied GRC this week, starting off with the Paya Lebar branch.
Among the services it will offer is help with drafting letters to government agencies, not unlike that offered at the Meet-the-People Sessions (MPS) of MPs.
The PAP will offer such help on the fourth Friday of every month at its branch office in Hougang Avenue 1, Paya Lebar branch chairman K. Muralidharan Pillai said on Wednesday.
At these monthly sessions, the branch will also offer family counselling and legal assistance, provided by trained counsellors and lawyers on a voluntary basis.
The party's charitable arm, the PAP Community Foundation, will also offer a job placement service, and distribute food vouchers and other forms of aid to needy residents.
Dubbed One-Stop @ Paya Lebar, such services will be based at the party's Paya Lebar branch office, which will be open on weekdays from 10am to 5pm.
The four other PAP branches within Aljunied GRC will roll out similar services in the coming months, Mr Pillai added.
After the PAP team in Aljunied GRC lost in last May's General Election, the party took a break from providing community services as it underwent a period of review and leadership renewal. Defeated candidates George Yeo, Lim Hwee Hua and Cynthia Phua stepped down as chairmen of their respective branches earlier this year.
On Wednesday, Mr Pillai stressed that the letter-drafting service is 'not a Meet-the-People Session'. He pointed out that unlike letters written by elected MPs, the letters drafted by Paya Lebar branch activists will be signed by the residents themselves.
He said: 'We respect the people's decision, and have discontinued the weekly MPS.'
He pointed out that even if the party was replicating services provided by the elected Workers' Party MPs, such replication could only be of benefit to residents.
All residents, even those who did not vote for the PAP, Mr Pillai added, were welcome to use the party's services.
He said: 'As far as community assistance is concerned, it's not about politics.'
