An ex-PAP Community Foundation (PCF) kindergarten principal misappropriated $40,000 and was sentenced to three months jail for the deed.
Lee Ooi Chun, 60, has been gambling away her money and accumulating huge debts.
Soon, Lee accumulated so much debt that she took to taking the money collected at the kindergarten to pay for it.
The kindergarten is in Ang Mo Kio.
So, between September 2009 and October last year, Lee took $37,117.60 to pay for the debt.
The money came from registration, insurance and uniform fees. In order to try to keep her tracks hidden, Lee did not keep any records of the money and only kept the acknowledgement receipts.
However, when an internal audit was done in February this year, it was found that some money has disappeared.
That was when Lee was exposed.
Lee’s lawyer, Lee Ee Yang pleaded for leniency for Lee. He said that Lee has already returned the money she took and has almost paid off her gambling debt of $50,000. Her husband, Mr Lee, had helped to clear her debt and Lee is currently undergoing counselling now to deal with the addiction.
Lee pleaded guilty to two of six charges, with the rest taken into consideration.
To District Judge Crystal Ong, the judgement was crystal clear. She said that because Lee had misappropriated a large sum of money and it was a well-planned move to siphon the money away from the people, this meant that Lee has broken the trust the people have.
And in order to prevent other people from breaking the trust and misappropriating the money, a strong penalty has to be given.
Lee could have been jailed for up to seven years and fined for each count of criminal breach of trust.
She is now a teacher at an enrichment centre.
