The “Face-to-Face” political discussion conducted by the YPAP at the NTUC Building is one spectacular wayang any true blue Singaporean should not miss. MP Baey Yam Keng and Mediacorpse artiste Tay Ping Hui are the highlights of the event with the noticeable absence of Teo Ser Luck, who came in casual shirt and jeans an hour later in the 2 hour event, (most probably overslept).
Hosted by Sembawang YPAP branch leader Abner Koh, the talkshow-like event started off with a short introduction on the American-accented Tay Ping Hui, and a number of lame jokes between the YPAP leader and his MP about credibility of politicians and actors. When asked if Tay Ping Hui would be credible himself, MP Baey Yam Keng said “He has a Double Major in Politics and Economics remember.” stand in this election, he said “will consider. I can contribute to society bybecoming a (PAP) MP. Why not?”
On the topic of Personality Politics, the YPAP leader says that a politically apathetic voter will choose to vote on personality, in this case, Tay Ping Hui being a popular actor from Mediacorpse. Tay Ping Hui disagreed and highlighted the importance of substance in a candidate, citing the example of Sarah Palin whom he didn’t think well of. MP Baey Yam Keng agreeing totally with Tay Ping Hui, highlighted the importance of using Personality Politics to gain popularity for himself. He explained why he as a politician(apparently assuming he has a lot of substance) tries to reach out to voter by making appearances in TV and charity shows.
During the Question-and-Answer session, the first question from the floor shot:
“To Tay Ping Hui, did you choose to serve the PAP just because it is the ruling party and it is easier to get into Parliament? Why the PAP?”
Tay Ping Hui replied he was approached by an Opposition Party before but turned the latter down. Citing the analogy of a Merz and BMW, he said he chose Merz because he is attracted and appealed to PAP’s long track record.
My second question was addressed to MP Baey Yam Keng: “Is politics with PAP the only avenue to having a stack in policy making? Can one only be heard when you are in the PAP?”
MP Baey Yam Keng said there are a lot of avenues one can have access to the PAP, and raised the topic where Opposition Parties these days are getting more active and attracting better talents. However, he also said joining the PAP is more constructive because to effect any changes in policies, the ministers in power are his fellow colleagues and hence “easier to talk to”.
He also unabashedly said that the PAP get “better” candidates than the Opposition because there is a larger selection pool within the PAP.
A TOC representative asked isn’t PAP is already built on the persona of MM Lee. To which MP Baey Yam Keng replied that the MM has already loosen up his reign over the PAP and it is time for the younger PAP generation to carry the torch.
An Indonesian-turned-Singaporean new citizen later made a comment in the QnA(he should be asking questions though), that Singaporeans need to mature and take responsibility of the nation, and it should not always be a top-down approach. Tay Ping Hui said the PAP is heading in the right direction, MP Baey Yam Keng cited the ERP as examples and said the technology “is too high tech” for Singaporeans, and MP Teo Ser Luck said PAP policies are far-sighted and not easily understood by Singaporeans, hence the complains. Teo Ser Luck said “Try having one day without ERP, see what happen.”
When asked about the rise of new media, Tay Ping Hui said the young generation has to be objective and filter out the “noises”. He ridiculed that some websites are outright negative and the people need to have an open mind.
In the last question from a NTU student, she asked if the PAP have caused political apathy among youth due to GRC walkovers and censorship.
MP Baey Yam Keng: “Mainstream media is very credible…”
Tay Ping Hui: “The Mainstream media is not untruthful…”
and there you go …another closed-door mental masturbation session just ended.
