Schoolgirls get books published

WHILE many writers can only dream of getting their books published, two young girls have their wishes fulfilled through a writing competition.
Lee Kitt Anya, 11, and Steffina Yuli Suratso, 16, launched their first books in print and digital format at The Arts House on Friday. The two are winners of international publisher Marshall Cavendish's annual writing competition, the Budding Writers Project, in the primary and secondary categories respectively. Into its 10th year, the project is an initiative that promotes writing in children. Winners have their work published and sold in bookstores here. Anya, a Primary 5 student at Singapore Chinese Girls' School, won with her story, The Crying Dream, which highlights the plight of foreign workers. It is about an Indian national, Jaidev, who comes to Singapore in search of work and a better future for his family back home.
