Paedophile escapes caning

A PAEDOPHILE escaped caning on Monday for molesting six girls, aged one to nine, between March and September this year.

Salim Abdul Rahman turned 50 years old last week and the law stipulates that only those younger than 50 can be caned.

But he will have to serve 10 years in preventive detention, with no chance of early release for good behaviour.

He pleaded guilty on Dec 8.

Then, the district court heard that Salim, who had been diagnosed with paedophilia by a government psychiatrist, had confessed to having the urge to touch young girls twice a week.

He would usually target seven- to nine-year-olds by pretending to ask for directions or offering them food before he molested them.
