Overseas bookings for Aust hotels face GST charges

Bookings made for stays at Australian hotels using offshore agencies, such as Expedia and booking.com, will be hit with the 10 per cent GST surcharge under proposals announced in last night’s budget.

“Both Australian and foreign consumers are increasingly booking Australian hotel rooms through online services based offshore, which are taking advantage of the exemption designed for offshore tour operators,” the Treasurer said last night.
