Over S$115m spent on NDP over past decade

SINGAPORE - Over S$115 million has been spent on the National Day Parade (NDP) over the past 10 years, and the highest expenditure was for NDP 2010.

Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen gave the breakdown in a written parliamentary reply to Workers' Party member, Gerald Giam.

Over S$20 million was spent on NDP 2010 at the Padang, compared with about S$17 million for NDP 2011, staged at the Marina Bay floating platform.

The higher expenditure in 2010 was due to the works to harden the field at the Padang so that it could withstand a heavier load, as well as the installation of LED screens and supporting towers for the visual display.

In general, Dr Ng said costs of the NDP rose substantially when held in venues like the Padang and Marina Float, compared to when it was held in the National Stadium. That is because the Marina Float and the Padang require substantial preparatory work for the show and spectator stands.

Dr Ng added that the NDP show itself accounts for about half the expenditure and includes cost of production and items like costumes, props and lighting.

The remaining expenditure is on infrastructure development and improvement works, logistics and supplies, publicity and security operations.

Manpower costs are represented in all the above items.

On average, about 10,000 Singapore Armed Forces and Home Team personnel are deployed for the NDP, and Dr Ng said that few civil servants are directly involved.

This year, 125,000 spectators watched the parade "live" at the Marina Bay floating platform during the three National Education shows, the preview and the actual parade. Over 2 million people also viewed the show on television. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
