Tuesday was International Women’s Day. In Berlin, this has even been a public holiday since 2019. Whether you have to close the schools and paralyze the economy, I will leave out for a moment. However, in view of the blatant human rights violations against women in many, predominantly Islamic, countries, it is important and necessary to remember the long road to equality.
Especially since the erosion of the safety of women and girls has been steadily progressing for years. Even in Germany, the reality of their lives is increasingly characterized by sexual assault, rape, physical harm and murder. Unforgotten is New Year’s Eve in Cologne in 2015, when hundreds of women were victims of sexual assault.
By this night at the latest, women have learned the lesson that they are no longer masters of their personal freedom and security. Anyone who goes out has to consider what clothing is “appropriate”. Because showing too much skin or wearing loose hair can even be understood by men from the Muslim culture as an “invitation” to cross borders.
No headscarf, no security
In Islam, family honor depends to a large extent on the behavior and reputation of the female family members. Wearing a headscarf is a religious obligation for women and girls from puberty onwards in Islam. The Koran commands them in suras 33 and 59 to “cover themselves in their cloak”, because in this way they are “more likely to be recognized” and “would not be hurt”.
A woman who is visually recognizable as a Muslim through the headscarf is virtually safe from attacks. An “unbelieving” woman therefore not. So the Muslim headscarf is not a harmless piece of cloth, it is the calling card of the inhuman Sharia and the symbol for the oppression of women.
The outdoor outfitter Jack Wolfskin has probably never heard of the struggle of Muslim women for freedom and self-determination. The company is currently advertising with a fully veiled model. A sponsored video clip has been running on social media featuring “Amira,” a hiking-loving British Muslim woman wearing a niqab. Jack Wolfskin praises the concealment, which only leaves out the eyes, as a desirable diversity with the following slogan: “Amira is the founder of the “Wanderlust Women,” a community that advocates more diversity in the outdoor area!”
Concealment is the end of self-determination
Cheers to the marketers who have managed to square the circle in selling a sign of inequality as a symbol of freedom. The headscarf is the end of all diversity, it is the uniform of a misogynist religion. In countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran, women are jailed and physically punished if they don’t cover themselves properly. Under Taliban rule in Afghanistan, it sometimes even costs them their lives. What message does Jack Wolfskin want to send to women and girls in the Islamic world?
The veiling of women is the end of self-determination and individual development. Muslim “influencers” and romantic nature shots cannot change that. It remains to be hoped that the customers will penalize the company accordingly for this unsuccessful advertising campaign.
