Djibouti was elected as president of the 75th World Health Assembly; vice-presidents were elected from Malaysia, Bulgaria, Indonesia, Togo, and the United States.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 23 – Malaysia’s Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin was yesterday elected as one of five vice-presidents of the World Health Assembly, the decision-making body of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Khairy’s election – together with representatives from Bulgaria, Indonesia, Togo, and the United States as the five vice-presidents, as well as Djibouti Health Minister Dr Ahmed Robleh Abdilleh as president – were confirmed at the 75th World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, yesterday.

Malaysia was selected last October, at the WHO Western Pacific regional meeting, as a vice president of the 75th World Health Assembly to represent the Western Pacific region.

The theme of this year’s World Health Assembly is “health for peace, peace for health”.

“The Covid-19 pandemic and other health emergencies with international reach have highlighted the leadership and coordinating role of WHO in responding to such events.

“Strengthening preparedness for and response to health emergencies are a key theme of the Health Assembly,” said WHO.
