Cop jailed for pocketing money
By Leong Wee Keat | Posted: 16 September 2010 1712 hrs

SINGAPORE: A police officer who pocketed S$70 from a wallet handed over to him by a good samaritan was jailed four months, a District Court heard Thursday.

Twenty-seven-year-old Mohamed Hanafi Mohamed Riza misappropriated the money on August 4 last year, while manning the Jurong West Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC).

Thirty-three-year-old Mr Ronnie Woo had found Mr Puah Wei Khian's wallet and handed it to Hanafi. However, no police report was issued to Mr Woo.

Hanafi kept the wallet after reporting off duty and took S$70 before disposing of the wallet in Woodlands.

Several hours later, Mr Puah proceeded to the NPC after Mr Woo told him the wallet had been handed over to the police.

But there was no record of Mr Puah's wallet being handed over.

When confronted, Hanafi admitted he misappropriated $70 from the victim's wallet and used it for his own purposes, Deputy Public Prosecutor Kwek Chin Yong said.

Pleading for leniency on Wednesday, Mr Sunil Sudheesan - Hanafi's lawyer - said his client had "acted out of character".

Even though he had been an officer for six years and was holding the rank of Sergeant, Hanafi's career in the police force was effectively over, the lawyer added.

"He made a one-off mistake and he is very sorry," said Mr Sudheesan, who asked for a lenient sentence.

However, District Judge Jasvender Kaur agreed with the prosecution that a custodial sentence was appropriate as the public expected the highest integrity from police officers.

She sentenced Hanafi to four months' jail.

For misappropriation, Hanafi could have been jailed up to seven years and/or fined.

Woman jailed four months for cheating
By Leong Wee Keat | Posted: 16 September 2010 1604 hrs

SINGAPORE: A woman who took advantage of the kindness of others was jailed four months for cheating.

Between April and June this year, 37-year-old Ng Sock Kuin approached 12 victims around the island and pretended she needed money for medical expenses.

In at least five instances, she lied to the unsuspecting victims she was pregnant and was experiencing a miscarriage, a District Court heard Wednesday.

Even though she was not, the five victims believed she was sick, needed medical treatment and gave her a total of S$5,650 in cash.

In one instance, Ng told a 22-year-old woman her stomach hurt and needed money to see a doctor.

The woman believed Ng was ill, needed medical treatment and gave her S$350.

In total, Ng cheated 12 people of S$10,450. She pleaded guilty Thursday to six charges of cheating with six others taken into consideration.

While pleading for leniency, Ng said she committed the offences as her father was ill and needed money to pay his medical expenses.

After being released from prison in 2005 for drug-related offences, Ng said she stayed clean but suffered a relapse prior to the commission of these offences.

Ng could have been jailed up to 10 years and fined for each cheating charge.

The first one is a policeman. He should be upholding the law not breaking it. Should not come as a surprise he gets a heavier sentence then others for similar offenses
