Former drug addict Mahmood Salleh, 53, is dying of lung cancer.

With months to live, he is racing against time to make up for his past by making amends to his father, visiting his mother's grave and sharing his story in a book to warn others of the dangers of drugs.

Mr Mahmood, who has been in and out of jail nine times since his teens, has this simple message to share: "Don't try any drug, not even once. It doesn't matter what type of drug. Once you've tried it once, you can't forget it."

Once, out of desperation to break free from the habit, he even asked his parents to tie him to their bed. He screamed and struggled when the urge returned. In the end, his mother released him as she couldn't bear to see him in this state.

And he remained chained to a lifetime of drugs.
