Police in Taoyuan in northern Taiwan busted an illegal gambling ring on Aug. 10, arresting 51 gamblers of advanced years with a combined age older than the redwood trees of Yosemite, reports China Times, our Chinese-language sister newspaper.
The police seized NT$5.8 million (US$200,000) in illegal gambling proceeds. The seasoned gamblers hid the money in a trash can and feigned ignorance when the police raided the scene.
The unofficial "casino" where they gathered only admitted players with more than N$100,000 (US$3,300) to throw around. The place opened a month ago and was open two days a week. It earned a profit of more than NT$1 million (US$33,000) before it was busted.
