HOUSTON — Police say an 8-year-old boy has fatally shot his 5-year-old brother in a Houston motel room where they were staying with their father.
The incident happened about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at a Motel 6 on Interstate 10 in the western section of the city.

Police Sgt. Bobby Roberts says the boys’ father had left them alone for a few moments to pay for their room. When he returned, the older boy ran out to meet him and told him of the shooting. The father went inside and found the boy lying on the floor with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Roberts says the shooting is apparently accidental, and the Harris County district attorney’s office will decide whether the father faces charges.

An eight-year-old autistic boy has fatally shot dead his five-year-old brother in a Houston motel room where they were staying with their father.
The incident happened about 10:30am on Tuesday at a Motel 6 on Interstate 10 in the western section of the city.
Police Sgt Bobby Roberts said the boys’ father had left them alone for a few moments to pay for their room.

Roberts told KHOU.com: 'Well the dad had a gun so I don’t know if the gun was in the room or the truck.

'We don’t know exactly where it was at when this happened.'
Police said the family had been living at the motel for a year after moving to Houston from California, because the father needed to find a job.
He was still looking and planning to sell the gun and power tools to help make ends meet.

The boys’ mother has been in jail for at least two weeks. It was not clear why she was arrested.
