NEW YORK — A New York City police detective has pleaded guilty to hacking into email accounts and accessing a federal law enforcement database without authorization.

Federal prosecutors say Friday Edwin Vargas paid more than $4,000 to hacking services to get login information for at least 30 different people, including 20 current or former NYPD employees.

They say he was able to access at least one NYPD officer's personal email account.

Prosecutors say the 42-year-old detective also admitted to accessing the National Crime Information Center database without authorization to get information about two NYPD officers.

Attorney Peter Brill says Vargas is a 20-year veteran of the NYPD and wants to put the episode behind him.

The NYPD didn't immediately return a message seeking comment.

Sentencing is scheduled for next March.
